How to Know If God Is Speaking to You – And Not Just Your Own Thoughts
When what you hear feels natural rather than dramatic, how do you recognise if it’s God? A grounded reflection on growing discernment.
There have been moments in my life when I encountered God in a way that felt almost unreal.
Expansive.
Like stepping into a different atmosphere.
Like touching something electric.
Understanding didn’t come gradually. It came like a wave.
Suddenly I saw differently.
I understood differently.
It felt like walking into a wider world.
And at first, I didn’t resist it.
I rested in it.
I enjoyed it.
I rode that wave for a while.
There was clarity.
There was peace.
There was a sense of stepping into something larger than my current reality.
But then something else entered the room.
Voices of concern.
Practical reasoning.
Well-meaning advice.
Old patterns that felt familiar and responsible.
And slowly, I shifted back.
What I heard wasn’t dark.
It wasn’t condemning.
But it felt too good.
Too clear.
Too expansive.
Too opposite to what my outward circumstances were showing me.
Outwardly, it didn’t line up with what I thought would need to change in order for this to be possible.
What I saw in the physical didn’t mirror what I had understood internally.
People I respected were advising in completely different directions.
And my religious framework told me to be careful — that if something isn’t explicitly written, one-to-one, in Scripture, you shouldn’t build your life on it.
So I hesitated.
Instead of leaning in deeper, I adjusted.
I returned to what felt safer.
I chose what looked responsible.
I began thinking again the way I used to think.
And this wasn’t just one moment.
It has been a pattern.
It often begins with dissatisfaction — a hunger, a sense that I cannot stay where I am.
Questions rise.
I ask for understanding.
I search.
And then — suddenly — something opens.
When God speaks, the understanding comes with it.
It’s not just words.
It’s illumination.
In Hebrew thought, hearing and seeing are closely connected. When God speaks, you don’t just receive information — you perceive. Something becomes clear from the inside.
But when the outer world doesn’t immediately reflect what you’ve heard…
When circumstances seem to contradict it…
When fear begins whispering through the voices around you…
Old patterns reactivate.
And what could have become obedience becomes delay.
Looking back, I see something I didn’t see then:
God’s voice has never once been smaller than my circumstances.
It has often required my circumstances to bend over time.
If someone had told me earlier that peace could function as a compass — that I could stay with what felt deeply aligned even before it made sense externally — it would have changed how quickly I walked.
Because the real tension was never:
“Is God speaking?”
The real tension was:
Can I trust what feels this good, this clear, this expansive — even when everything around me looks different?
Maybe you know that tension too.
You hear something inside.
It feels clean.
It feels life-giving.
It feels like stepping into a wider world.
But the physical reality hasn’t caught up yet.
So you wonder:
Is this really God speaking — or is it just my own thoughts?
Why God’s Voice Can Feel Bigger Than Your Circumstances
When God speaks, it is rarely just a sentence.
Understanding comes with it.
It’s not only information. It’s illumination. Something connects. Something settles. Something becomes clear from the inside.
That’s why it can feel expansive.
You’re not just thinking a new thought. You’re perceiving from a different vantage point. For a moment, you’re seeing beyond your current limitations.
And that is often where the tension begins.
Because your circumstances have not changed yet.
People around you may not see what you see.
The numbers may not reflect what you understood.
The path may not look safer — only clearer.
So you ask:
How do I know this clarity is God — and not just my own imagination?
That question is not wrong. It’s wise.
And Scripture gives us anchors.
How to Know If God Is Speaking to You
Jesus said:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
(John 10:27)
Notice what He did not say.
He did not say:
“My sheep maybe will recognise me.”
He assumes recognition.
Recognition grows in relationship.
But how do you recognise?
The New Testament gives us steady markers.
1. His voice carries His character
God does not contradict Himself.
If what you are hearing contradicts the revealed character of God in Scripture — His goodness, His integrity, His love, His holiness — pause.
But if it aligns with His heart, even if it stretches you, don’t dismiss it too quickly.
James writes:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach.”
(James 1:5)
Without reproach.
God’s voice does not manipulate you with shame or guilt into obedience.
2. His voice produces fruit over time
Paul describes the fruit of the Spirit as:
“Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
(Galatians 5:22–23)
Not adrenaline.
Not panic.
Not manipulation.
Peace is not the absence of movement.
It is inner steadiness in movement.
If a direction consistently produces deeper alignment with the fruit of the Spirit — even through difficulty — that matters.
3. His Spirit bears witness internally
“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
(Romans 8:16)
There is an inner resonance.
Sometimes subtle.
Sometimes strong.
But it feels like agreement, not coercion.
It may stretch you.
But it does not fragment you.
This is where many people get confused.
They expect God’s voice to always feel familiar and contained.
But sometimes clarity comes like that wave I described earlier.
Sometimes it expands your understanding in a way that feels almost electric.
Of course that moment felt big.
And it opened another set of questions:
Am I ready for this?
Is this really me?
Does this fit who I think I am?
If something aligns with our current identity, we adopt it easily.
But when it stretches beyond our present self-understanding, we often try to carry it in our own strength — and then retreat when doubt surfaces.
So ask:
Does this align with His character?
Does it produce joy, peace, love, and integrity within my inner life?
Does His Spirit bear witness within me?
If the answer continues to be yes over time — do not dismiss it simply because your circumstances haven’t caught up yet.
Sometimes what God shows you requires revisiting old beliefs before it can make sense externally.
“His voice carries peace — even when it stretches you.”
What Are the Signs God Is Speaking to You?
When God is speaking to you, His voice will align with His character as revealed in Scripture. It will not contradict His goodness, His patience, or His love.
Over time, it will produce fruit — not panic or manipulation, but deeper peace, integrity, and love.
And internally, His Spirit will bear witness within you, creating an inner agreement that does not easily dissolve under pressure.
These signs together form a pattern that helps you discern whether it is truly God speaking — or something else.
How to Discern God’s Voice When You’re Unsure
If you’re wondering whether what you’re hearing is truly God, here’s a simple and practical way to approach it.
Not theoretical.
Something you can actually do.
Step 1: Name What You Think You Heard — Without Interpreting It
Not spiritually exaggerated.
Not polished.
Not impressive.
Instead of:
“God is calling me into something massive.”
Try:
“I sensed a pull toward leaving my current job.”
“I felt peace when I thought about taking that step.”
Stay close to what actually happened.
Specific.
You can even ask to test any small step:
What did I feel in my body?
Did it feel expansive or contracted?
Did peace increase or decrease?
Clarity often gets lost when interpretation outruns experience.
Step 2: Revisit God’s Character — Not Just Other People’s Interpretations
Sometimes we think we are checking something against Scripture — but we are actually checking it against what others have taught us about Scripture.
Instead, ask:
Does this align with who God has shown Himself to be?
Is He patient?
Is He generous?
Is He consistent in love?
If what you heard reflects His goodness, even if it stretches you, do not dismiss it too quickly.
Fear scans for contradiction.
Faith scans for consistency in His nature.
Step 3: Observe What It Produces Over Several Days
Over several days, return to it.
Ask:
• When I think about this direction, does love increase?
• Does peace deepen?
• Does integrity feel stronger?
• Or does urgency, panic, or pressure take over?
Notice especially this:
Sometimes God speaks first.
Then fear attaches commentary.
Discernment means separating the original clarity from the later noise.
Fruit reveals source over time.
In my experience, when something is from God, it may be challenged — but it does not lose its clarity when I revisit it honestly.
Step 4: Notice the Inner Witness
Beyond excitement or fear — is there an inner agreement that does not easily disappear?
Not excitement alone.
Not pressure.
Not obligation.
But something that feels aligned.
Even if it stretches you.
Even if it requires courage.
That inner witness may not shout.
But it remains.
It returns.
It does not dissolve under pressure — it simply waits for you to come back to it when you’re ready.
Step 5: Move One Small Step
You do not need to solve your entire future.
Just take one step that aligns with what felt clear.
Then ask yourself:
If the obstacles weren’t there — how would I feel about taking this step?
Is there joy underneath the resistance?
Is hope stronger than fear?
Often the perception of impossibility is louder than the actual step required.
Discernment sharpens through movement.
If You Want to Grow in Recognising God’s Voice
If you’re still asking,
“How do I know if God is speaking to me?”
“How can I tell if this is God or just my own thoughts?”
You’re not alone.
Learning how to hear God’s voice is not about chasing dramatic experiences or spiritual signs.
It’s about learning how to discern His character, recognise His peace, and notice how His Spirit bears witness within you.
Discernment grows through practice.
Through testing what you sense on the inside.
Through comparing it with Scripture.
Through watching what kind of fruit it produces over time inside your inner being.
